Adrian L. Edwards, 87, of Las Cruces, NM, passed away on November 23, 2021 in Las Cruces. It was unexpected and we are shocked and deeply saddened. His greatest joy was his family. He was a loving husband, a proud father and a doting grandfather. Adrian was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing colorful flowers, tasty peppers and fragrant herbs. He loved playing golf with friends and family and was a known presence on the NMSU and Red Hawk golf courses. He was a voracious reader and a constant learner and was very knowledgeable on a wide range of topics, as his many friends and colleagues will attest. Adrian enjoyed travel and photography and had an extraordinary portfolio of images recording his travels and interests. And of course, he was a loyal fan of the New York Knicks, through thick and thin. Adrian had been active in his beloved Las Cruces community since he and Jackie moved here 21 years ago. He served as a volunteer on the Dean's Council of the College of Arts and Sciences at NMSU and established an Endowed Scholarship at NMSU, intended to benefit African American undergraduate students with a STEM major or concentration, in the College of Arts and Sciences or Engineering. He also served on the Boards of La Casa and the New Mexico State University Academy for Learning in Retirement (ALR). He was born in New York City and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He received his bachelor's degree from Wagner College in New York and his medical degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Adrian served as an officer in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army. After completing his service, he was selected as a Cardiology Fellow at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical School (now Weill Cornell Medicine/New York Presbyterian). Adrian L. Edwards had a long and distinguished medical career and retired from private practice in New York City, practicing Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Cornell University Medical School, a diplomat for the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the Institute of Medicine, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Edwards, the mother of his children; his mother Enid Lamos Edwards; and his brother Desmond Edwards. Adrian is survived by his wife and partner of thirty years, Jackie Mitchell Edwards; his son Mark Edwards and daughter-in-law Janet Rich Edwards and their children Amina Bulman (Evan), Kea Edwards and Kerrick Edwards; his son Scott Edwards and daughter-in-law Beth Adams and their children Liana Edwards and Kayla Edwards; his daughter Tracie Westby and son-in-law Kennet Westby and their children Porter Westby and Cooper Westby; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and other extended family and countless friends. Adrian lived a full and productive life and touched many people. He opened many doors for those who came after him and blazed many trails. He raised standards and left the world better than he found it. His smile and his chuckle, his firm handshake and his twinkling eyes will be sorely missed. Following Adrian's wishes, cremation has taken place; he did not wish to have a funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to any of the following in Adrian's memory: *The Adrian and Jackie Edwards Endowed Scholarship at NMSU to support undergraduate students with a declared S.T.E.M. major, and/or students with a S.T.E.M. concentration in the College of Arts and Sciences or Engineering. Preference will be given to African American students. https://nmsufoundation.org *Southern Poverty Law Center 400 Washington Avenue Montgomery, AL 36104 - *La Casa. Inc.
