Albert "Cheno" Duran Sr., 83 of Las Cruces, New Mexico passed away on Tuesday January 26, 2016 in the comfort of his own home. He was born on December 20, 1932 in Las Cruces, NM to Jose and Margarita Duran. Albert graduated from Las Cruces Union High School in May, 1950. Upon graduation, Albert joined the United States Air Force where he served honorably during the Korean War. Albert returned to Las Cruces where he worked as a civilian for the Department of Defense at White Sands Missile Range while attending New Mexico State University. Albert was hired by the National Aeronautic Space Administration in January 1955. Through hard work and dedication Albert rose through the ranks, ultimately retiring in January 1988, as Chief Administrative Officer for NASA at the White Sands Test Facility. His retirement was short-lived and he returned to work for Dona Ana County as the Contract Compliance Administrator. After nine years with the County, he retired on August 1998. His family realized that he wouldn't sit idle as demonstrated by his volunteer work at El Caldito Soup Kitchen. He enjoyed helping others and realized how fortunate he had been in the blessings he had received. Upon retirement, Albert dedicated his life to his family. His family will miss being able to call dad for advice and for help with do-it-yourself projects. He generously gave his time, talent, and treasure. Albert's passion was wood-working, adorning his lawn with "yard art" and spending time with his family. His wit and quick humor will be missed. Those left to mourn his passing are his three daughters and one son: Patricia Duran, Stella Cardenas and husband Roger, Sylvia Duran and Mike Casaus, and Albert Duran Jr and his wife Christina. Other survivors include his brothers, Robert A. Duran and Joe A. Duran. He was a beloved grandfather of eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; Tanya Espalin (Jason), Renee Garcia Ramirez (Suzanne), Amanda Quiniones, Mathew Cardenas (Ashly), Larissa Duran, Amber Quiniones, Jonathan Cardenas, Erica Duran, Delilah and Hailey Cardenas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Margarita Duran, his wife Aurora Duran, his brother John Alderete and sister Julia Lobato. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Monday, February 1, 2016 at St. Genevieve's Church where the prayer vigil will follow at 7:00 PM. The funeral liturgy will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday February 2, 2016 at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina. The right of committal and burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Officiating will be Bishop Ricardo Ramirez. Family and friends will gather at the VFW Post 3242, 2001 N. Mesquite immediately following the interment. PDF Printable Version
