Albert Lee "ABE" Collier passed away on November 2, 2014 at 80 years of age. He died peacefully at his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Abe was born on September 1, 1934 in Bellflower, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Florence Collier and one brother, Gene Collier. He has two sisters, Betty Shane and Janet Evans, who currently reside in Farmer City, Illinois and Tucson, Arizona, respectively. Abe married his soul-mate, Connie Ham, on September 1, 1956. Abe is survived by Connie and their three children, Vicki Baker of Mahomet, Illinois; John Collier of Fulton, Mississippi; and Richard Collier of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Abe is also survived by five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Abe entered the Navy on August 25, 1952 and served 18 months at sea on the USS Macon prior to separation from service on October 19, 1954. After he separated from the Navy, Abe worked predominantly as a maintenance engineer; first at Stokley Van Camps cannery in Illinois and then at Memorial Medical Center here in Las Cruces. After retiring from Memorial Medical Center, Abe's love of driving led him to a driving position with Enterprise Car Rental Company. He was the only driver for the local Enterprise Company for about two years and he drove for Enterprise for a total of 12 years prior to retiring for the second time. First and foremost, Abe loved his family and his country. Abe was a humble man who unconditionally loved Connie throughout their 58 years of marriage. He was completely dedicated to the welfare of Connie and their family. Abe was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle and man. Abe was a Mason life-member and he enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, camping and cooking. He made amazing cornbread, cakes, cookies, rice krispies treats and many other goodies when any of the many children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews came to visit. He had a definite sweet tooth and loved all kinds of candy. He made the best old-fashioned popcorn which anyone visiting his home on any given Sunday evening would have the pleasure of enjoying for dinner with a glass of ice cold milk. This was his traditional Sunday family dinner for over 50 years! We will love Abe always and miss him forever. A Celebration of Abe's Life will be held at Getz Funeral Home, Las Cruces, New Mexico on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 9:00 AM. PDF Printable Version
