Angelita P. Carabajal, 94, of Tortugas, NM died Friday, March 4, 2005. She was born Oct. 16, 1910 in Mesilla, NM to Faustino and Maria De La Luz Duran Pedraza. She moved with her family to Tortugas, NM and married Felipe Carabajal. Together they had 3 sons and 8 daughters. Angelita was a member of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. She participated in the Feast days of the Ysleta Pueblo and also in the Feast days of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Tortugas for many years. She dedicated herself to teaching her entire family the Tigua Indian ways and traditions. She was a skilled potter and taught her pottery-making skills to her daughters. She was very proud of her Native American heritage, as she always used to say: "Vivan Los Indios!" Angelita's very favorite thing was singing the Tigua chants, listening to them and hearing the beast of her drum. In her later years, she also enjoyed watching her novellas, sewing and eating lots of sweets. She is survived by her sons Jose of San Martin, CA, Lupe of Tortugas and Adrian of Las Cruces; daughters Rosa Apodaca and husband Manuel, Fermina Paz and husband Frank, Carolina Carabajal, Albina Carabajal, Ernestina Carabajal, Margie Lazos all of Tortugas and Susie Barela and husband Martin of Las Cruces; As head of the family with 5 generations, Angelita had 33 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren and 40 great-great grandchildlren who knew her fondly as Angelita or "Mamita". She is also survived by a very special person Laura Orta of the family home. Angelita was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Carmen Orta, son Felipe Carabajal, granddaughter Beatrice Perez, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. She leaves behind a great legacy of traditions and heritage. We are all grateful for her teachings. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A visitation will be held from 5 to 6 PM Monday, March 7, 2005 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where a prayer vigil will follow at 6 PM. The funeral mass is at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 8, 2005 also at Our Lady of Guadalupe with Fr. Don Adamski officiating. Rite of Committal will be at the Tortugas Cemetery. Pallbearers are Adrian Carabajal, Laura Orta, Susie and Martin Barela, Xavier Paz, Frank (Ralph) Paz and Elias Hernandez. PDF Printable Version
