Ann Saulsberry, 82, of Las Cruces died at home January 7, 2005. Ann was born to William and Annie MaeYoung of Jordan, NM, on April 19, 1922. Her husband, parents, three brothers and six sisters preceded her in death. Ann is survived by her brother Lawrence Young of Portales, NM; sons Regor and Garen of Las Cruces, NM; daughters Randa (Brown) of Farmington, NM and Retta of Rio Rancho, NM; four grandchildren: Regina (Hawkins), Jason, Leann (Simmons), and Isaac; two great grandsons Jonathan Simmons and Reilly Hawkins; and a great granddaughter Keterina Hawkins. A memorial service to celebrate Ann's life will be held at the University Church of Christ, 1555 East University Ave, in Las Cruces at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, January 11, 2005. She will be buried with her husband Jay at Ft Bayard National Cemetery, near Silver City, NM, at 2:30 PM. Ann grew up on her family's ranch approximately five miles from Jordan, NM. There she participated in the ranch and farm work. She recalled plowing fields with a team of horses. She participated in sports and worked to sell farm products to help fund a gym for her small school at McAlister. After graduating from high school, she went to Tucumcari and worked for a rancher. With most of the able bodied young men drawn into the service due to the war, the women often had to handle the work the men would have done. Ann's work included milking the cows, fixing fence, and driving the old John Deer tractor (Popping Johnny). She remembered putting in 2,100 acres of wheat one spring and then harvesting and thrashing it in the fall. She and Jay L. Saulsberry were joined in marriage November 30, 1947, and lived in Tucumcari, NM where they were blessed with four children. Ann was outgoing and while in Tucumcari, served as President of the Federated Women's Club, Chairman for the Young Democrats, various positions in the Southern Pacific Railroad Lodge, Vice President of the Parent Teachers Association, and Church secretary. She loved being with people and loved to entertain before her health began to decline. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and children's Bible school teacher. The Southern Pacific moved Jay and Ann to Canutillo, TX in 1973. Jay retired and the couple moved to the Saulsberry Lazy V7 ranch at Datil, NM in 1982. With the couple's health decreasing they moved to Las Cruces three years ago joining their sons and their families there. Ann lost Jay on January 21, 2004, but things are better now, she is with Jay and they are with the Lord. PDF Printable Version
