Augustin "Tin" Ostos of Las Cruces died Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at the Las Cruces Medical Memorial Center. He was born August 14, 1944, at home in La Mesa, New Mexico, the 11th of 12 children, to Agustin and Estefana Ostos. Tin was a hard working, generous, loyal and passionate man with many interests. He loved going to the flea market, yard sales and collecting antiques, playing Gin Rummy with his friends, going to the casino, eating desserts, listening to his police scanner, watching novelas, fishing, relaxing in their cabin in Ruidoso, playing practical jokes, raising animals, and growing tomatoes in his garden. He loved his family and friends, had a wicked sense of humor and laughed easily. Tin met his wife Josie when they were 14 years old at a carnival fun house and married her when he was just 20 years old. They ran the Hwy 85 Trading Post together for 28 years. He loved good food, especially his wife Josie's cooking, and it showed! Tin always had a new toy or swing set found at a yard sale for his adored granddaughter, Sophia, and enjoyed playing with her, asking for "kissitos". He joined the National Guard as a young man and served 6 years. He proudly worked for the Las Cruces Fire Department for 25 years, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. He will be missed in his blue T-shirt and jeans and he is now enjoying that big yard sale in the sky. Tin is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Josie Ostos, of the family home, son, Ray Ostos, and wife Julia of Chandler, AZ: daughter, Marissa Ostos and companion Steven Getz of Las Cruces, NM; nephew/son, Gil Nevarez of La Mesa, NM; his siblings Natividad "Nati" Holguin, Eusebia "Chata" Montes, Antonio, David, Victor, Enrique "Mickey", Cruz, Ofelia Tise, and Fernando; and his very special granddaughter, Sophia. Tin was preceded in death by his sister, Josefa "Pepa" Nevarez, and brother, Miguel "Mike" Ostos. Pallbearers include Gil Nevarez, Raul Holguin, Poncho Holguin, Fernando Ostos, Joe Espinoza, and Bobby Ramirez. Honorary pallbearers are the Las Cruces Fire Department firefighters, and his brothers, Tony, David, Victor, Micky, and Cruz. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Friday, Sept. 14, 2007 at Getz Funeral Home where a prayer vigil will follow at 7 PM. The funeral mass will be given at 10 AM Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007 at San Jose Catholic Church in La Mesa, NM. The rite of committal will be at the La Mesa Cemetery. Officiating will be Fr. Ray Flores. The family would like to thank Dr. Rauth, MD and his staff for the countless hours and loving care given to Tin. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff at the MMC Step Down Unit.
