Benito Landin, longtime El Paso resident born March 10, 1937, passed away peacefully while at home with his family on Monday, November 17, 2008. After retiring as a Civil Engineer, Benito moved to Las Cruces in 2003 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Benito was a proud graduate of the 1956 class of Bowie High School in El Paso. He was honored to be the salutatorian of his graduating class. He was a member of the Bowie Bear varsity football team for four years and was selected twice to the Texas All-State football team. He was also an active member of the Bowie High School ROTC and received an appointment to West Point Academy. To remain close to his family, he accepted an athletic scholarship from New Mexico State University (New Mexico A&M at the time). He was a loyal Aggie and starting member of the 1959 Sun Bowl Championship Aggie football team and was a student assistant coach for the undefeated 1960 Sun Bowl Championship team. Benito was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend whose spirit, strength, counsel and support will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Norma; daughter Belinda Parra, her husband Peter and children Jason, Christina, and Catherine; son Ben Landin, his wife Sue, children Steven and Tiffany and granddaughter Jaycen; son Dan Landin, his wife Donice and daughter Alyssa; brother Alfonso Landin; and sister Catalina Chacon. Benito was preceded in death by his parents Vicente and Beatriz Ponto as well as his brothers Ernesto, Daniel and Guillermo. Pallbearers will be Alfonso Landin, Frank Martinez, Richard Lara, Charlie Johnson, George Mulholland, Pete Solis and Ruben Solis. A viewing will be held in El Paso on Friday, November 21, 2008 from 4:30-6:30 pm at Sunset Funeral Homes West, 480 N Resler Dr. A Rosary will follow at 6:30 pm. A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Holy Cross Church, 1327 N. Miranda, Las Cruces, NM. Cremation will follow and Ben will be placed at the St. Francis Columbarium in a private family service.
