Benjamin Fuhrman Archer, 98 was born in Gadsden, Alabama, August 2, 1907. He moved to southern New Mexico with his father and mother, F.F. and Anne Dora Archer and family. Thus began an intense life of interaction with the people and the soil of New Mexico. He was a farmer, family man, a church deacon, teacher, mentor, sustainer, a leader among Southern Baptists in New Mexico and world-wide. He helped develop men's work, church training and Sunday School work statewide. He loved the people of New Mexico and served on the original board of Memorial General Hospital for 21 years, 17 of those as chairman of the board. He was treasurer for Dona Ana County in the 30's and served twice as mayor of Hatch, New Mexico. For many years, he supported the farmers of the valley through the family business, The Archer Company, introducing the first automatic wire-tie balers and cotton pickers to southern New Mexico. One of the first EMS technicians in Hatch, Ben was always community-minded. After most people have retired, he and his life long friend, Clayborn Wayne, along with June Rutherford, began the process which led to The Hatch Chili Festival and development of the seven Ben Archer Health Centers over southern New Mexico. Though he never sought the accolades, the first such center was named in his honor by the board set up to govern the fledgling service. He served as the first, unpaid administrator and helped get it on its feet. He always sought to be of service, not to be served. We'll never know how many he secretly helped to "get a leg up." Left to celebrate his life are his son Don and wife Jerean, daughter Kay Archer Cain and husband Dr. Clyde Cain, son Robert and wife Lynda; grandchildren Scott Archer, Chris Archer, Dr. Craig Cain, Kari Steele, Brain Archer, and Angela Kirkland. 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Jones of El Paso, and many, many nephews, nieces and friends. Dorothy Archer, his wife preceded him in death as well as his parents and eight brothers and sisters. He will be missed but not mourned. He now sings among the heavenly choirs. PDF Printable Version
