It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bernice Maynez, with her family by her side on September 27, 2013 at Cottonbloom Assisted Living. She was 83 years of age and was a lifelong resident of Las Cruces. Bernice was born on June 27, 1930, the daughter of David Herrera and Refugia Nevarez. She is survived by her son David Maynez, daughter Laura Maynez, granddaughter Lisa Maynez and great granddaughter Olivia Porras, all of Las Cruces. Bernice is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Corrine Maynez and Juliet Maynez, also of Las Cruces, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jose Raul Maynez, her parents David and Refugia Herrera, brothers-in-law Ruben Maynez and Oscar Maynez, niece Jackie Maynez Rios and nephew A. Patrick Maynez. Mrs. Maynez was a graduate of Holy Cross School and Las Cruces Union High School. Upon completion of the latter in 1948, she began work with the City of Las Cruces and so began her long service to the people of New Mexico at the city, county and state levels. She was eventually named City Clerk and it was after her long service at this post that she accepted appointment by the Third Judicial District of the State of New Mexico to become District Court Clerk where she remained for 20 years until her retirement. In retirement she did volunteer work at Holy Cross School during the time her granddaughter was enrolled at the school. In 1988, she was selected to the Office of Probate Judge. She went on to win three succeeding re-elections for this office. Upon completion of her third term, she retired from public service. The family would like to Thank the warm and caring staff of Cottonbloom Assisted Living, Ambercare Hospice and Dr. J. Roberto Duran. As she had requested, she will be cremated, and a Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 7, 2013, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda, Las Cruces, NM with Msgr. John Anderson officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Francis Columbarium at Holy Cross Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in Bernice's name be made to either of the two most precious things to her, children and animals.
