Bertha M. Huff, 84, entered eternal peace on September 18, 2012. She was born to parents Lell and Vera Burnside on July 17, 1928 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She married Frederick Luther Huff on August 8, 1947 and he preceded her in death on July 1, 1980. Also preceding her in death were her sister Helen Starkey and daughter-in-law Nancy Huff. She is survived by her sister Ina Dean Burnside, her three sons, James Louis of Las Cruces, Richard Earl (wife Renee) of Bellingham, WA, and Frederick Dean (wife Lynda) of Las Cruces. One of her greatest joys was her grandchildren by her son Richard; Ryan E. Huff, Rachel E. Huff, and Richard E Huff II. Grandson Ryan blessed her with two great grandchildren, Ava and Gabriel Huff. Raising three rambunctious boys kept Bertha busy as a homemaker. When all three boys were in school she went to work for JC Penny Company as a bookkeeper until her husband needed her to help him manage their pick-it-yourself farm south of Old Mesilla. After his passing, she completed her bachelor's degree in home economics from NMSU while also earning a certificate in gerontology. She worked at Good Samaritan Village for a few years. All of her life she enjoyed sewing for herself and others. She turned this love into a business when she started and ran her own small upholstery shop in Mesilla Park until health issues forced her to retire. After retirement she kept busy with volunteer activities for Good Samaritan and later, the First Baptist Church of Las Cruces. Alzheimer's and other complications finally brought these activities to an end. She spent her last few years in the Alzheimer's unit at Casa De Oro, here in Las Cruces and finally ended up in the care of the angels at Mesilla Valley Hospice. A celebration of Bertha's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 5, 2012 at the First Baptist Church, 106 S. Miranda Street, Las Cruces, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 Montana Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88005-3223 or the Children's Ministry at the First Baptist Church, 106 S. Miranda Street, Las Cruces, NM 88005. PDF Printable Version
