Betty B. Carter, 82, died surrounded by her daughters on Thursday, June 14, at La Posada of the Mesilla Valley Hospice. She was born June 16, 1924 to Marie S. and Albert H. Bissmeyer in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from Mt. St. Joseph-on-the-Ohio College in June of 1947. Betty moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where she met her husband and best friend Len, in 1947 and taught at the Regina School of Nursing until 1950. The family moved to Las Cruces in 1958. Betty worked as a school nurse for the Las Cruces Public Schools from 1959-1984, and she recently described her experiences in an article written for one of the Mesilla Valley Historical Society publications. She loved spending time with her family, traveling, reading and playing duplicate bridge. Her parents, siblings and her husband of 55 years, Len, preceded Betty in death. She is survived by her daughters Mary Carter Janke, of Las Cruces, Sandra Marie Carter, of Anchorage, Alaska, Gerry Carter LeFebvere and husband Larry, of El Paso, Texas, Cynthia Elizabeth Carter and Terry Carter Brown, of Seattle, Wash.; grandson, Bruce Len Fox; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including members of the Las Cruces Duplicate Bridge Club friends. A funeral mass to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Monday, June 18th, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Msgr. John Anderson officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at the St. Francis Columbarium. 1327 N. Miranda St. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Betty's name to the Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E.
