Cecil M Spurlin

Cecil M. Spurlin, a long time native of Casper Wyoming and resident of Las Cruces, New Mexico returned home to be with the love of his life on February 3rd, 2018. He lived all of his 91 years to the very fullest. Cecil was born in Bula, Texas on August 27th, 1926 to Arthur Carl Spurlin and Letha O. Redden. He loved his childhood, although tough at times there was never a story that didn't involve excitement and joy. In his young adult years he spent many weekends at the local dances showing the ladies his moves. His jet black hair and debonair attitude sure made the ladies swoon, at least that is what he said and we all agree. He drove across the state line one night for just that reason, and that is where his life would change. That is the night he met his baby, Mary Kathryn Parrish. Their love extended decades and blossomed for an amazing 67 years. Cecil was an amazing worker, at home and in the oil fields. At one time he was the only welder in the entire state of Wyoming rated to do pressure tested welding to 10,000 lbs psi. He was a craftsman of all kinds. Gifted at seeing potential in everything. He designed oilfield equipment and spent many years as a Quality Control Manager for Tesoro Petroleum. He retired in 1985 with over 30 years of life yet to live. Cecil found some of his greatest joy in being outdoors. Whether it be fishing, hunting, arrowhead searching or golf, he loved to enjoy God's beauty. He even volunteered his time by hiking historical trails and cleaning up campsites. Cecil guided young men in his church in the Royal Rangers program and blessed them with his knowledge. He and his wife Katie dedicated many hours and love to the churches they belonged to in Casper and Las Cruces. Family was his heart. One kiss for his wife Katie was never enough; he always needed a few more pecks. His children were his life, but those grand-babies, they were his purpose. Any time they walked in the room the first time for a visit, his voice turned to a whisper and his strong arms would embrace. To him, his grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great great grandchildren were his biggest gift from God. Cecil designed his own golf course, made his own knives, and told the biggest and best stories. Gardened the most prosperous of gardens, cooked a mean enchilada and made the best chocolate cake. He was our father, honorable husband, grandfather, and friend. One of the best and last cowboys around. Cecil is survived by his children Steve Spurlin, Scott Spurlin, and Susan Gutierrez and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Kathryn Spurlin, and son Leland Spurlin. There will be a celebration of life held in the spring, Cecil's favorite time of the year.
