Charles L. Baldwin of Las Cruces, New Mexico died in his home in Las Cruces on November 28, 2005 after a prolonged illness. Since 1958, the year he moved to Las Cruces, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church. He was born in Anna, Texas on November 19, 1919, a member of a pioneer Texas family and a direct descendant of a member of the Army of the Republic of Texas, led by General Sam Houston. Mr. Baldwin loved, visited, and worked on the house and farm owned by his family since 1840, in north Texas. As a student at Anna High School, he conceived of and named the athletic teams the "Coyotes" and was instrumental, with his brother, Commissioner Glen "Bud" Baldwin in the creation of Baldwin Lake, a soil conservation endeavor and a major asset to many of the people of the City of Anna. He attended North Texas State University and later studied transportation law at both Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University. He was admitted to practice transportation law by the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1955. After a distinguished career as a farmer and a transportation manager at both Burrus Mills and Montgomery Ward, Inc., he became supervisor of all E. B. Mott stores in New Mexico, a position he held from 1958 until 1990. He is survived by his dearly loved and courageous wife Annabel, his son Dr. John Baldwin of Boston, his grandsons Alistair and Andrew Baldwin of Boston, and his grandson Ben Baldwin, of Dallas. The family will be greeting friends of Mr. Baldwin at the Getz Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday, January 30, 2005, and a graveside interment service will be held at his ancestral home in Anna, Texas at Highland Cemetery next week. Dr. John Baldwin will preside, with the Reverend James Cooper. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends and relatives express their appreciation of Charles's life though donations to the CBR Institute for Biomedical Research, 200 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA 02115, an outstanding non-profit research organization fighting the disease that afflicts his eldest grandson. Contributions will be accepted with profound gratitude. PDF Printable Version
