Charles Robert Tarr was taken home to be with God his Heavenly Father and his Savior Jesus Christ on October 19, 2021. He passed peacefully at home with family and friends. Charles Robert Tarr was born July 8, 1928 to Robert and Essie (Oldham) Tarr in Paris, Kentucky. Charles was the second of five boys. He was named after his grandfather Charlie and father Robert. Charles accepted Jesus as his savior at an early age and attend church regularly. He completed elementary school and three years of high school in Paris Kentucky. He finished his final year of high school in Dayton Ohio. Charles returned to Kentucky with a dream of moving to California to raise avocados. So, he and his brother set out for the drive. In route, they detoured to Chicago to visit relatives and Charles was introduced to his future wife Stella Marie Tyler. They married September 29, 1950 and remained married until his homecoming. To this union were children Charles Robert Jr. and Linda Marie. Charles was drafted into the Army in October 1950 and rose to the rank of Sergeant 1st class in communication. After four years, he was honorable discharged and offered a position in Washington DC to work with the CIA in communication. He declined to stay rooted with family in Chicago. Charles was one of the first Black men to own a full service gas station in Chicago at the age of 22 years old. After the gas station, he worked for the Post Office and as a civil engineer at Chicago State University. He retired in October 1989 and moved to Las Cruces in December that same year. Charles was a hard worker who was admired by his coworkers and friends. If you met Charles, you had a friend for life. Charles was famous for his story telling. He would captivate family and friends with stories and jokes that would be remembered and often retold. He was handy with tools, loved cars and motorcycles. He was an active member of Christ Church of Las Cruces. The highlight of his week was attending Sunday service and his favorite song was Amazing Grace. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Stella, daughter Linda Goforth (Stevon), brothers LaVon (Christiana) and Kenneth Tarr, grandchildren Jasper, Ebony, Charles III, Lauren (Marcello), Crystal, Jennifer (Jeremy), Mitchell (Tiffany), Cortnee and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Charles Jr., daughter in law Evelyn, brothers Teddy and Eugene, brother in law William Tyler and sister in law Susan Roby. Service Information
