D. Kent Evans, Age 72, of Las Cruces, N.M. died May 29, 2012 in Las Cruces. Kent was born March 13, 1940 in Pueblo, CO to Darol and Thelma William Evans. He married his wife of almost 50 years, Anna Mae Ashton Evans on June 23, 1962 in Tampa, FL. He met his wife in their freshman year at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL. They both graduated with BA's in June, 1962. He spent the next twelve years in Cocoa Beach, FL where he was in aerospace human resources and manned flight awareness especially with McDonnell-Douglas. He received many honors such as the Silver Snoopy Award from the Astronauts of the Apollo missions, their highest award. The year he was President of the Cocoa Beach Jaycees his club came in second nationally out of 6500 clubs. In that time he and his wife had their three wonderful children. Before he left Cocoa Beach, he had attended many school activities, active in Cub Scouts, and lots of camping trips with the family. He came to Las Cruces in 1975 with Lockheed and three years later went to PSL at NMSU where he worked for 22 years, then on to the County Commission and also his endeavor with Spaceport America. Most of the people here know how he served his community and all the awards he received. Whatever he became part of, a work related organization or the many other clubs and community organizations he was involved in, he was never just a member. He was involved and did his best to help in anyway he could to make it better. Even with all his involvement in the community he never forgot his family. He hardly ever missed a baseball, softball, soccer, or football game his children and grandchildren played in. He always attended all their school activities, even those which took place out of town. His summer vacations were always with family numbering from 10 to 22 according to whom all could make it to destinations like Yellowstone, Hawaii, Disney World, Rocky Mountain National Park and many many more which most always included some form of fishing, fly stream being his favorite. He truly loved all of his family which loved him as much right back. He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae of Las Cruces, his children D.K. Jr. (Norma), Darlene, Derek (Lisa) all of Las Cruces. His seven grand children Dylun and Dayvina of Richfield UT., Derika, Brandon, Bronti, Crystal, and Derek Jr. of Las Cruces. His four great-grandchildren Kambree, Kyla, Alex, and Zell all of Richfield UT. He is also survived by his brother Gary (Mary) of FL and sister in-law Sue Mullis (Wayne) of FL his brother in-law Elmer Ashton (Linda) of TN. Also may nieces and nephews. Anna Mae would like share the following words: You can shed tears that he is gone Or, you can smile because he has lived You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back Or. You can open your eyes and see all the he's left behind Your heart can be empty because you can't see him Or, you can be full of the love you shared You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or, you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him and only that he's gone Or, you can cherish his memory and let it live on You can cry and close your mind, be empty, and turn your back, Or, you can do what he'd want: Smile, open your eyes, love, and go on.
