Daniel "Bruce" Cameron, of Las Cruces and Professor Emeritus at The College of San Mateo in California, passed away quietly and fittingly on Presidents Day, February 20, 2012 at the age of 82. He was a passionate educator, mentor, and leader to his students, colleagues, family, and friends. Foremost, he was a devoted husband and cherished friend to many. Born with his twin sister Esther in Quasqueton, Iowa, the family shortly relocated to Santa Rosa, California where he spent his youth. After military service in Japan from 1946-1949, he returned to Santa Rosa. There he met the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Patty O'Brien Cameron. Bruce and Pat moved on to New York City where Bruce earned his B.A. degree, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1967. He continued with his calling to English Literature, receiving his Masters Degree at Columbia University. Upon returning to California, he began a 25 year career of teaching and inspiring his students in English Literature, Grammar, Film, and Greek Mythology. These years were spent energetically. The couple made their home in the Emerald Hills of Redwood City with their beloved cats, the Siamese "Humphrey Bogart", Oriental "Clark Gable", and Tabby "Cary Grant". He was an early, important advisor to former student Dr. Craig Venter, the recognized "Father of Human Genomics". After retiring from the college, Bruce enjoyed a second career, at Dr. Venter's invitation, at The Institute of Genomic Research in Rockville, MD. Bruce and Pat settled in to the village of New Market at Lake Linganore; making new valued friends and creating lasting memories. Upon his second retirement, the Camerons made an extensive search of cities and towns across the country to find the right place to live. Las Cruces was it. In August of 2001, they relocated to their new and final home. Here they added new, interesting and supportive friends. Another joy has been their "smile-maker", a Havanese dog named Tess. Bruce continued to enjoy life to the fullest. As a once accomplished tennis player, in later years he very much enjoyed watching major tennis on TV. He also loved the scenery and birds of Las Cruces. He felt blessed to have known wonderful neighbors, friends, nurses, and caregivers. He is survived by his adoring wife, Pat, and by many relatives and friends. All were exceedingly important to him. Services will be held on Saturday, February 25th at 1 p.m. at the Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces. PDF Printable Version
