Darrell Lee Moyer, 68, of Las Cruces, NM passed away on Thursday February 10th, 2022 in Las Cruces, NM. Darrell was born January 31st, 1954 in Coffeyville, KS to Earl and Arietta Moyer. He grew up in Alamogordo and Las Cruces NM with his parents, older brother Robert, and younger sister Ruth. He was a typical boy growing up and had his fair share of mischief; from hiding in the bushes from a disgruntled mom until his dad got home, to being saved by his little sister from a night outside when he missed curfew. He attended school at Mayfield High School and graduated in 1972. He began working at Mountain Bell Telephone Company as one of the first male operators in Las Cruces. He worked for Mountain Bell, that later became CenturyLink, for approximately 45 years and retired as a technician in 2018. After graduating high school, he met his former wife Carma Jane and they had their son Michael. Darrell was an avid bowler and played an enormous role in the bowling community. He shared his wisdom through coaching youth bowlers. He ultimately became a Silver Level coach, and held seminars to instruct others to become coaches and master their coaching skills. He coached Sunday Youth League and took the participants all over NM, AZ, CO, TX, and Las Vegas NV to participate in tournaments. He took youth from throughout NM to participate in the Junior Olympic Bowling Tournaments. He was instrumental in starting the NMSU bowling team and led them to become one of the top 20 teams in the nation. After moving to Rio Rancho NM, he started coaching Albuquerque youth leagues at multiple bowling centers throughout the city. He became one of the head coaches for the Sandia High School bowling team. Darrell had the patience of a saint with the youth and endured many situations from a leg through a glass window, to near fires, to having to explain the mistaken "gang signs" his youth group were throwing. He always took pride in the kids that he coached. During his early years of coaching, Darrell met one of his best friends Tom "Junk Yard Dog" Connor and became a dirt track racing enthusiast. He loved being part of the pit crew and spent several decades getting down and dirty changing tires, scraping mud, and working on the race car. They travelled all over AZ, NM, and TX. Darrell took his job as part of the crew seriously; so serious that after blowing the engine he drove all night from AZ to NM and back with a new one. As the cheering section, he always motivated Tom before each race with a hound dog howl, earning himself the nickname "Hound Dog"! He was also a mentor and friend off of the lanes and the track and had a way of helping those that were struggling in life. He touched many people's lives with his wisdom and outgoing personality. There are countless people that will hold a place in their hearts for Darrel and he will be forever missed. He is survived by his son Michael Moyer (Carrie) and his granddaughters Kimber and Maddison of Las Cruces NM; his brother Robert Moyer (Martina) of Dayton, TX; his sister Ruth Rodriguez (Raul) of Las Cruces NM; and his nieces Erika Guedry (Jeffrey Paul) and family, Sara Rodriguez (David) and family, and Dominique Rodriguez (Lindsey). He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Arietta Moyer. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday February 25th, 2022 at 2 PM at Getz Funeral Home 1410 E.
