David S. Garcia - dedicated husband, father of two, grandfather of six, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend of many - passed away on November 19, 2022 at the age of 78 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. David was born to Ernesto and Amelia Garcia in East Los Angeles, California on January 20, 1944, and was later raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He graduated from Las Cruces High School before attending Durham Drafting College where he graduated with an associates degree. After graduation, he went to work for the Physical Science Laboratory at NMSU, where he spent his career until he retired. After working a few years, he met the love of his life, Dina Lucero, and they spent 54 years together as they built their family. Married in 1968, David and Dina raised two sons together, Richard and Paul. Through the years, David enjoyed fishing, developing his skill as a silversmith, being a band parent, and making friends wherever he went. Many over the years have enjoyed wearing the jewelry David made. David and Dina started as band parents at Las Cruces High, and later followed their sons to NMSU to become the official band parents of the NMSU Pride Band for many years. He was "Dad Garcia" to many through that experience. Later in life, he loved being a grandparent. David was authentically and wholeheartedly there for those in his life. David was preceded in death by his parents Ernesto and Amelia. He is survived by his wife, Dina; their son Richard and his husband Frank Chiki in Avon, Indiana; their son Paul and his wife Lisa in Raleigh, North Carolina; their grandchildren Tony Garcia-Chiki and his son Osiris, James Garcia-Chiki, Zachary Garcia-Chiki, Emily Garcia-Chiki, Sydney Garcia, and Addison Garcia; his brother Ernest and wife Dorothy in Las Cruces; his sister Barbara Bencomo in Las Cruces; and numerous nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers are John Fannin, Michael Fannin, Renee Caro, Jacqueline Villescas, Michelle Garcia, Charlene Bencomo, and Melissa Bencomo. In his memory, donations can be made to his memorial fund, which will support a scholarship at the NMSU Music Department. Memorial services and reception will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral (1240 S Espina St, Las Cruces, NM 88001). There will be a Rosary at 1:00 pm held on Friday, December 16 followed by a Mass at 1:30 pm.
