David Douglas "Doug" Wood, Major (Ret.) United States Air Force, 93, peacefully soared into the wild blue yonder to his final duty station in heaven on Monday, March 5th, 2018 in Las Cruces, NM. Doug was born on August 8th, 1924, in Jasonville, Indiana, graduating from Jasonville High School, intending to attend the University of Indiana and play basketball as a Hoosier. God had other plans for Doug, and duty called him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force in 1943. He completed two years of college, studying Military Science and served honorably for his country for over 20 years, first as a Navigator in both combat and non-combat missions in World War II, and later as a command pilot. After the war, he attended flight training school, piloting B-47's and B-52's for the 379th Bomb Wing and then the 19th Bomb Wing of the Strategic Air Command at Homestead Air Force Base, FL, where he retired in 1963. Doug's final duty station is now flying with the Angels. During his time in military service, Doug met and married his soul mate of 63 years, Ellen Rovello, at a USO dance in Waco, Texas. After retirement from the military, Doug became a stockbroker and financial advisor in Miami, Florida, accepting a position in 1977 in Las Cruces with Quinn and Company and later Citizen's Bank. Doug and Ellen loved to entertain, travel the world, play golf, and hosted many a party for family and friends in their home. While in Las Cruces, Doug was a member of the Rio Grande Rotary Club, Retired Officer's Association, and proud member of the Southern New Mexico Honor Flight Group Number 2. Doug and Ellen cherished their strong Catholic faith and family, and were members of St. Albert the Great Newman Center, where they met many new friends, young and old, from all walks of life. Doug is survived by his wife, Ellen Rovello Wood; daughters Janet Kay Hoffman and Pamela Mills Wood; grandchildren Sabra Summer Godwin, Brittany Summer Scobee, Robyn Michelle Fritze, Frank Edgar Deen IV, and Jana Iverson, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren. Doug was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Thelma Wood; brother Donald, and daughter Cherie Ann Deen. A memorial service celebrating his life is scheduled for Monday, March 19th, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Getz Funeral Home. A graveside service with military honors will be held on March 20th, 2018 at 2:00 pm, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Alzheimer's Association, NM Chapter, P.O. Box 15159, Las Cruces, NM 88004. Many thanks to the loving and caring staff at the Village of Northrise, Desert Willows Homestead Program, who have been and continue to be a blessing to the family. Memorial Information
