Don D. Sewell went to heaven with the Lord Jesus on January 21, 2024, where he’s now enjoying a sound mind, free from pain and care. He was born on December 22, 1939, in Mangum Oklahoma. He was born to Clarence and Gladys (Aebeischer) Sewell. Don went to high school in Artesia, NM, where he played basketball, football and baseball and graduated in 1958 as salutatorian. In 1959 he married Donna Ruth Hand of Artesia and was married to her until 1980. He went to New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM, and got a bachelor’s degree in education. He worked at White Sands Missile Range part time as a student. After college, he taught History and coached Cross Country and Golf for a year at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, NM. Then he taught Physical Education at Valley View Elementary School in Las Cruces. After that he taught PE at Mesilla Park Elementary School where he spent the lion’s share of his career. His coaching included basketball, football, track, gymnastics. He taught square dancing too. In 1982 Don married Roberta Ann Wheeler of Las Cruces, NM, who was his wife the rest of her life. Don taught at some more schools including Loma Heights Elementary School. After retiring from the public schools he taught for a couple years at Immaculate Heart of Mary School, in Las Cruces.

Don enjoyed many hobbies over the years. He liked playing golf and basketball, looking for Indian arrow heads, refinishing furniture, square dancing and calling, water skiing and fishing, watching Aggie basketball and football, garage saleing and telling jokes.

Don is predeceased by his wife, Roberta Sewell, father Clarence Sewell, mother Gladys Sewell, brother Jerry Sewell, and sister Ramona Black. Don is survived by his sister Louela Strong, son Daniel Sewell and wife MaryAnn (Guzman), of Las Cruces, NM, and son Jarod Sewell and wife Susie of Las Cruces, Don’s son Dag Sewell and his wife Dee (Rackler), of Portales, NM, and daughter Charity Foote, and husband Allan, and children Ian, Kaelyn, and twins Seth and Eli, of Destrehan, Louisiana, Dag’s daughter Leighanna Foote and husband Wesley and children Kyle and Elisa of Peyton, Colorado, Dag’s daughter Abigail Head and her husband Billy, and sons Benjamin and Nathanael of Alamogordo, NM, and Dag’s daughter Tabitha Weir, and husband Clay and children Paislee and Olin of Maljamar, NM, and Don’s step daughter, Amber Wheeler of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

A visitation is scheduled for 5:00 pm on Monday January 29, 2024, at Getz Funeral Home. The funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, also at Getz Funeral Home.
