Eileen Mary ("Pat") Cavanaugh passed away on June 20, 2005, in Northampton, Massachusetts. She was 92 years old. Eileen was born in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, and raised in New Hampton, Iowa, along with her brothers John and James. After graduation from high school and a year at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she worked as legal secretary in New Hampton until moving to Washington, D.C. in 1941. She was employed for 10 years at the United States Department of Labor for the Undersecretary of Economic Affairs. Thereafter, she worked for over 20 years for some of America's leading research cardiologists at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. She retired from NIH in 1973. Eileen met her husband, Bob, in Washington, D.C. They were married on March 13, 1943. They raised two children: Mike, now a university professor who resides in Northampton, Massachusetts, and Jim, an attorney living in Irvine, California. In 1975, Bob and Eileen moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where they made many lasting friends. While in Las Cruces, Eileen donated her time for more than 20 years as a volunteer assistant at Memorial Hospital. Eileen moved to Northampton, Massachusetts in December, 2004. Besides her two sons, Eileen is survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a legacy of her generous and optimistic example. Eileen enjoyed cooking, traveling and golf, but she especially relished the company of family, friends, and life-long Democrats. She will be dearly missed by one and all. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Friday, June 24, 2005 at Getz Funeral Home where the Prayer Vigil will follow at 7 PM. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 8:30 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2005 at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church with Fr. Don Adamski, officiating.
