Edith Vesta Berrier, age 99, died Friday, March 4, 2005 at Casa Del Sol in Las Cruces, NM. She was born February 24, 1906 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her adoptive parents were John and Olive Berrier. She came to Las Cruces in 1916 from Ottumwa, Iowa to live with her grandmother. She attended Las Cruces High School and graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a B.A. in Education and New Mexico State University with a M.A. in Education. She taught for 43 years in the public school systems including Alamogordo, Mesilla Park, Fairacres, and Mesilla. She had a great love for her profession and the children she taught. She was a member of the National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teachers Fraternity, Kappa Kappa Iota Teachers Sorority and a founding member of the Dona Ana County Teachers Federal Credit Union (now Ft. Bliss Federal Credit Union). In 1966-1967 she was chosen "Teacher of the Year". She married Rollo T. Place in 1930. He died in 1939. They had one daughter, Yvonne. In 1943 Edith married Rex P. Barrier. He died in 1988. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Las Cruces. She had many loves and interests including reading, gardening, and her grandchildren. After retirement she and her husband Rex traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Edith is survived by her daughter Yvonne Place Richardson and her husband Jack; three grandchildren, Randy Richardson and his wife Debbie; Bill Richardson and his companion, Teresa Burden, and Vicki Richardson Coogler and her husband David. Also surviving her are her two great grandchildren, Dustin Richardson and Dani Coogler. Funeral Services for Edith will be held at 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at First Baptist Church, 106 South Miranda with Dr. Gerald Qualls officiating. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery.
