Edward J. Miller, composer, performer, and teacher of music, died Saturday, August 31st, after a prolonged illness. Born in 1930 to Sophia and Samuel Miller of Miami, Florida, Ed began his career playing jazz trombone and arranging music for bands in which he played. He started composing music in college and later studied composition at the Hartt School of Music and the Berlin Hochschule fuer Musik. He joined the Hartt Faculty as an associate professor in 1959 and taught music theory and composition there until 1971, when he was hired as Professor of Composition and Music Theory by the Oberlin College Conservatory, where he taught for 27 years until his retirement. Ed was a productive and accomplished composer. He received commissions from the Hartford Symphony, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, and Berkshire Music Center and awards from the Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Koussevitsky Foundations. His music was performed by major orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra and Hartford, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco Symphonies. Among his best-known works are Anacrusis (1975) for symphony orchestra, Going Home (1985) for clarinet and stereotape, and Beyond the Wheel (1987) for violin and chamber ensemble.
