Elsie (Schlosser) Baltensperger, 84, a long time resident of Las Cruces, NM, died peacefully at home Sunday, January 1, 2012. Elsie was born February 12, 1927 in San Angelo, TX to Paul and Odessa (Adams) Schlosser. Several years later she moved to Midland, TX where her father worked as a geologist with Phillips Petroleum Company. Elsie spent her childhood and teenage years in West Texas before graduating from Midland High School in 1944. She attended North Texas State University and also Texas Woman's University, historically known as Texas State College for Women, in Denton TX, the sister school to Texas A&M at the time. She remained a staunch supporter of Texas A&M her entire life. Elsie married Arden Baltensperger on June 12, 1947 in Denton, TX and began her journey as a wife and mother. From 1949 to 1953 she lived in Denton where she and Arden had their first two children. Elsie and Arden then moved to Ames, IA for four years where she watched after the children while Arden attended the university. After Arden received his PhD in 1958, they spent five years in Tucson, AZ before settling down in Las Cruces in 1963 where she has lived for the past 49 years. Although Elsie loved to travel, she cherished southern New Mexico and never stayed away from Las Cruces for long. While raising four children Elsie was also active in the community. She was involved in the NMSU faculty women's organization, was an active member and elder at the Las Cruces First Presbyterian Church, as well as a cub scout den mother numerous times. Elsie was a "grand hostess" throughout the years to many Agronomy students, faculty, and church groups. Elsie was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother to four children, thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years Arden Baltensperger; son Bruce Baltensperger and wife Anna; daughter Cathey Manning; son Paul Baltensperger and wife Rita; son Carl Baltensperger and wife Maureen. She will be forever missed by all her family and many friends who knew and loved her. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 7, at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 East Boutz Road. The Rev. Norm Story, pastor, will officiate.
