Esperanza M Diaz, 76 of Las Cruces, NM died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Memorial Medical Center. "Chata" as she was affectionately known, was born August 26, 1931 in Las Cruces, NM to Ciriaco and Cecelia Meraz. Chata was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic Church. She served as both mother and father to her children and grandmother and grandfather to all her grandchildren. A very special person, Chata will be greatly missed by all her loving family and friends. Chata is survived by four daughters, Manuela Lancaster and her husband Mark of Seattle, WA; Cecelia Villarruel and her companion Pete of Covina, CA; Maria Isela D. Montes and her husband Hector of La Mesa, NM; and Leticia M. Diaz of Las Cruces, NM. One son Gilberto M. Diaz Sr. and his wife Elena of Las Cruces, NM; one brother Elias Meraz and his wife Sylvia of Las Cruces, NM and one sister Socorro Archuleta and her husband Primi of Las Cruces also survive Chata. Chata is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and her sister in law and best friend, Stefana Diaz. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel V. Diaz; two sons, Reymundo M. Diaz "Beast" and Francisco M. Diaz "Kicks", two brothers, Luis Meraz and Frederico Meraz and one sister Renalda Rodriguez. Visitation for Chata will be from 5 to 7 PM on Monday, June 25, 2007 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel where the Prayer Vigil will follow at 7 PM.
