Send Flowers Evelyn Green Horst August 9, 1920 - July 30, 2015 Evelyn Green Horst, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, 30 July 2015, at the Good Samaritan Village, Las Cruces. Evelyn was born August 9, 1920 to Wilbur Ward (W.W.) and Lola Nelson Green in Pocahontas, Iowa. She grew up in rural Iowa, graduated from Rolfe High School and later attended Chillicothe Business School in Missouri. Evelyn enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corp in 1943, and served in the U.S. Army until 1947. She was proud to be a WWII veteran. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Master Sergeant James M. Horst; they were married in 1949. Together, Evelyn and Jim lived at various Air Force bases including Lowry AFB, Colorado, Moody AFB, Georgia, Travis AFB, California, and multiple tours at Eieleson and Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. When Jim retired from the Air Force in 1970, they moved from Anchorage to join Evelyn's parents in Las Cruces. Evelyn took a position with the Bureau of Land Management and retired in 1983. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. Evelyn is survived by her sister, Ruth Landmesser of McMinnville, Oregon; her children, Barbara Houck (Gordon) of York, Pennsylvania, Richard Horst of Las Cruces, Kathy Horst (Bobbie) of San Diego, California, Linda Stanton (Scott) of Tijeras, New Mexico, Paul Horst (Rose) of Abilene, Texas and Mark Horst (Heather) of Las Cruces; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Jim Horst and her brothers Charles and Duke Green. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, 7 August 2015, at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Association.
