Fabian Narciso Matsuba, 47, of Las Cruces, died Friday, April 13, 2007 in the presence of his immediate family at Mesilla Valley Hospice. He was born February 2, 1960 in Las Cruces to Joe A. and Luisa Chavez Matsuba from Old Picacho Village. After graduating from Mayfield High School in 1978, he enlisted with the US Air Force. Senior Airman Matsuba became an Electrical Power Production Specialist. During January of 1981, at Lindsey Air Station in Wiesbaden, Germany, he was with the 1st Combat Communications Group (AFCC) that received the 52 American hostages released from Teheran, Iran. In recognition, he was nominated to receive the Humanitarian Service Medal. In 1986, he attended the Dona Ana Branch Community College and achieved a certificate in welding technology. Like his father, he possessed a natural talent for carpentry and woodworking. As a NM licensed contractor, he owned and operated the Picacho Peak Construction Co. A son, brother, uncle, and father will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Fabian is survived by his loving and caring companion of 10 years Alma Morales and their children Joseph Ambrose, 5, and Sonia Brianna Matsuba, 8, all of the family home; mother Luisa Matsuba of Old Picacho Village; sisters Corine M. Jay of T or C, NM, Belen Avilucea of Silver City, NM and Josie M. DiMatteo with husband Joe R. of Las Cruces. His nieces Shirley Hall, Frances Jay, Bonnie Avilucea, Margo DiMatteo, Melinda Montoya and his nephews Larry Jay, Robert and Rueben DiMatteo also survive him. Fabian was preceded in death by his father Joe A. Matsuba and two sisters Erlinda and Maria Matsuba. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 PM on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral where a prayer vigil will follow at 7:00 PM. His funeral mass is at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 19, 2007 also at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral with Fr. Sean Garrity officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Masonic Cemetery with military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Jay, Robert, Rueben, and Michael DiMatteo, David Sarabia and Enriques Rel.
