Fern Hass, age 96, died Wednesday, November 22, 2017, in Las Cruces, NM. Fern L. Hass was born on March 22, 1921, at Forrest, New Mexico, to Fred William Hass and Emma (Watson) Hass. A 1939 graduate of Forrest High School, Fern graduated from Highlands University in 1944. Her appetite for learning was only exceeded by her devotion to teaching. Fern received her Masters at Texas Tech University in 1951 and continued post graduate studies during her teaching career taking courses at several universities including Eastern New Mexico University, the University of Montana, the University of Hawaii and the University of Arizona. Fern taught school in Tucumcari, NM, from 1944 to 1953. She taught in Roswell in 1953, then moved to Artesia where she taught school from 1954 until she retired in 1980. In 1962 the nation's first underground school was constructed in Artesia and Fern taught there from the time it opened until her retirement. After retirement Fern continued to live in Artesia and Clovis, and has lived in Las Cruces for the past 16 years. Fern was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Marie Cooper and Elva Beevers; 5 brothers, Kenneth, Glenn, Clifford, Marvin and Robert Hass; and 4 nieces and nephews, Robert W. Hass, Don Hass, Linda Tidwell and Vickie Villanueva. Her survivors include her close friend for over 70 years, Lorene Tyson of Las Cruces, NM.; Her Nieces and Nephews: Betty (Hass) Perry and her husband O.D. of Bayfield, Colorado; Sandra (Beevers) Bates and her husband Ray of Las Vegas, NV; Dee Wade Beevers of Claude, Texas; Jim Hass and his wife Judy of Clayton, NM; Barbara (Hass) Barraza and her husband Ed of Tularosa, NM; Debra Beevers of Rio Rancho, NM; Marva (Cooper) Coston and her husband Terry of Tucumcari, NM; Phillip Hass and his wife Shana of Dalhart, Texas; Sara (Hass) Kelly of Houston, Texas; And Don's wife, Wanda Hass of Arlington, Texas. And a number of Great, Great-Great, and Great-Great-Great Nieces and Nephews
