Fern Unona Marie King, 90, of Las Cruces, NM went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 16, 2022. Fern was a loving wife, an amazing, precious mother, doting grandmother and great grandmother, sister, aunt and wonderful, giving friend. She is already tremendously missed, but we know she is at peace with her Lord and Savior and the Love of her life, her husband Warren. Fern was born on Dec 10, 1931, in Socorro, NM. She was one of 8 children, born to her mother Willie Victoria Wallace and her father Vannie B Manning. Fern had 4 sisters (OnaV, Effie, Shirley, and Louise) and 3 brothers (Everett, Seth and Marvin). Fern grew up in Socorro and Belen, NM and when in High School, her family moved to Aztec, NM. Fern was very active in High School sports and was one of the schools Majorettes. When Fern was 16, her older brother Marvin was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident. Marvin was serving in the Navy during the Korean War and was home on leave. A young seaman, who by Divine providence, was serving with her brother, was sent to Marvin's funeral service to represent their ship and crew. That young seaman, Warren King, immediately fell in love with beautiful Fern and Sept 16, 1949, they were married. Their first child Kathy, was born in 1952, followed by David in 1953, then Brad in 1958, then their youngest, Tammy, a little surprise, was born in 1959. Warren received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1952, only 3 months after Kathy was born. Following his service in the Navy, Warren and Fern settled in Kirtland, NM, where Warren began his career with El Paso Natural Gas Co. Fern loved her Lord Jesus Christ and always sought out a strong Bible believing Church, wherever they lived. She was very active in Women's Missionary Union, Ladies Bible study and served in every church as a member of their choir. She was diligent and faithful in ensuring that every one of her 4 children were in church. She would routinely and consistently encourage, nurture, push, drag and do whatever it took to make sure her kids were raised and educated in the nurture of God's Word. She was always an active homemaker. She loved to garden and raised vegetable gardens in practically every place they lived. She always planted flowers to beautify every home they lived in. As an El Paso Natural Gas Family, Fern and Warren and their family lived in many El Paso Natural Gas "Camps" all over the 4 corners area of NW New Mexico. She provided for her family by canning fruits, soups, pickles and jellies. So amazing were her pickles, her kids would have them daily as after school snacks. Fern's passion was to provide and care for and love her family. She would prepare a huge meal, 3 times a day for 4 kids and her husband. She followed all her kids school activities, checked homework and attended most every sporting event. Her kids were blessed to hear her in the stands cheering for them…. often times telling the officials what an idiot they were or yelling at the coach for pulling out her child. Fern and Warren loved hunting. In those days, wild game meat was a staple for the King family. Fern and Warren hunted nearly every November. It was not unusual in the King household for Fern to be preparing supper, as Warren dressed out a deer or pronghorn antelope on the kitchen table. In later years, after major heart surgery, Fern still continued to hunt with Warren. Fern's love of the outdoors was evidenced by an annual family fishing trip to the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado. Fern and her family would camp for a week at a time, all 4 kids in a tent, followed in later years, by a small cab-over camper. True to form, Fern would place 3 beautiful meals a day with handmade desserts on the table…even when in the middle of the mountains. As all her kids were growing up, they thought she somehow knew everyone. We all soon became aware that our mom never met a stranger. She would strike up conversations with people anywhere…the grocery store, a restaurant, the Drs office and the conversation would usually end with "God bless you honey!" Holy Spirit flowing out of her with everyone she met. As her 4 kids grew and graduated High School, Fern sought outside employment in order to help her kids financially in college and trade schools. Anything to help her kids. In 1986, after 33 years, Warren and Fern were able to retire and shortly thereafter moved to Las Cruces to build their retirement home. After all those years of living in "Company Housing", they now had their own home…complete with a beautiful pecan orchard. They quickly became active members of Mesilla Park Baptist Church, which eventually became Mesilla Park Community Church, then Real Life Church. Again, as she did throughout her life, she was active in Church Bible studies, the choir and loved to teach children God's Word. Fern was preceded in death by her loving husband Warren, by her parents, Willie Victoria Manning Downey and Vannie Manning and her stepdad AB Downey, her sisters OnaV, Effie, and Shirley, her brothers Everett, Seth and Marvin and grandson Travis, Son of Brad and Chauntell. She is survived by her 4 children, Kathy Glenn of Las Cruces, NM, David King and his wife Brenda, of Parker, CO, Brad King and his wife Chauntell of Cloudcroft, NM and Tammy Nickell of Bayfield, CO, her sister Louise Bickham, Louise's Son, Baron Donaghe and daughter Belinda Kennedy, Grandchildren include Mathew King and Marcie Stanley, son and daughter of David and Brenda King, Luke King, son of Brad and Chauntell King, Mike W Glenn, David Jr and Michael Glenn, sons of Kathy, Great Grandkids Tallon, Braden, Aaron, sons of Mike and Melonie Glenn, Emersyn King, daughter of Luke and Jordyn King, Krew Stanley, son of Marcie and Chad Stanley, Alex King, Son of Mathew King and Erika Green, and James, Lahna, Katelyn,Liam, Sons and Daughters of David Jr and Marissa Glenn.
