Floyd Chester Smith, 87, of Las Cruces passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005 at the Adobe Assisted Living Community. Born Jan. 4, 1918 in Vernon, TX, he was the son of George Francis Smith and Bertha Maude Hardeman. Floyd's family moved to NM in 1925. He grew up in the Roswell, Capitan and Carrizozo area. Floyd Chester Smith, 87, of Las Cruces passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005 at the Adobe Assisted Living Community. Born Jan. 4, 1918 in Vernon, TX, he was the son of George Francis Smith and Bertha Maude Hardeman. Floyd's family moved to NM in 1925. He grew up in the Roswell, Capitan and Carrizozo area. In 1947 he moved to the Las Cruces area, where he has lived off and on since his death. He held a variety of employment opportunities throughout his lifetime. Most notable, working for the US Postal Service, the Southern Pacific Railroad, Potash Mines of Carlsbad, NMSU Physical Plant and was a welder o n the original construction of Bonita Dam. He began working for the City of Las Cruces as a gas line inspector in 1976 and retired in 1996. Floyd was a member of the LC Polo Club and helped to start the Old Times Reunion, which has been held in Nogal Canyon, NM since 1957. Floyd is survived by his son Dennis and his wife Becky of Las Cruces; daughter J. Darla La Monica of Marina del Rey, CA; stepdaughter Peggy Pirayesh and her husband Andy of Las Cruces; 4 grandchildren Shane and Dustin Smith; Sara and Ashleigh Pirayesh; 2 great-grandchildren Daniel and Ryan Smith. Floyd was preceded in death by his wives Carrie Dell Zumwalt and Kathleen Alys Evans; two brothers Claude (Buddy) and Leo Smith; sister Jewel Agnes Aguayo; and grandson Greg Prentiss.
