Fortunato (Nato) Gonzalez Jr, 70 of Las Cruces, New Mexico passed away on December 3, 2020 in Las Cruces, NM. Born on June 2, 1950 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico to Fortunato Gonzalez Sr. and Consuelo Gonzalez, he migrated at a young age with his parents and siblings to the United States. Nato attended Las Cruces High School and later followed in his father's footsteps working as a mason artisan. Nato expressed his skills and talent through his craftsmanship for many years and was able to pass on his wealth of knowledge to his sons. In December of 2006 Nato lost his vision. Although, losing his vison presented great difficulties, Nato did not let this negatively define him. Through his determination, will, and support of his family Nato made the brave decision to attend the National School for the Blind and Vision Impaired in Alamogordo, NM to learn to become self-sufficient. Nato graduated from school and thereafter learned to live independently and embrace his new life. He demonstrated his strength and perseverance by enrolling in college and studying to become a social worker. He wanted to share his story and empower other individuals with similar stories. He was soon nominated and received the title of Vice President of the local chapter of the National Federation for The Blind. As Vice President he raised awareness by personally building parade floats for local events and served as a guest speaker throughout various communities. Nato faced another health crisis and with a generousness act from his sister, Margarita, he successfully underwent a kidney transplant in August of 2012. Nato continued to live life to fullest and enjoyed spending time with all of his beautiful family and listening to music.
