Francis Newton (Newt) Winans, our loving Dad, Grand Dad, Great Grand Dad and friend, died in Las Cruces, New Mexico in the wee hours of the morning on September 8, 2015 at the age of 95! Newt was born July 6, 1920 in El Paso, Texas. Mother, Gladys Winans/McDonald and father Maurice Winans. He had one sibling, sister died at the age of 6 with Rheumatic fever. Francis was married to Celia Margaret Jones on December 21, 1941. They ran off to elope in Deming, New Mexico but the JP was out of town so they were married in Silver City, New Mexico. They were happily married for 66 years until her death in March 2008. Newt attended Texas Western College and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico State University in 1953. He held several diverse jobs including; boiler maker apprentice, machinist apprentice, and machinist for Southern Pacific Railroad; machinist mate and machinist instructor for the U.S. Navy; and mechanical engineer for the U.S. Army at White Sands Missile Range. His last job was very satisfying as he was instrumental in perfecting the early versions of anti-missile rockets. Newt and Margaret loved to travel and made several trips on cruise ships and bus trips with the Munson Senior Center. They loved to dance and were frequent dancers at the Big Band Dance Club. Even before the Big Band, they were in Square Dance clubs in the area. Newt was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Shriner's and loved to ride his mini-bike in the parades. He was a life-long member of Saint Paul's Methodist Church and loved to go to Bible study and learn more about the Word. Newt is survived by son, Jerry Winans, his wife Charolette and daughter, Linda Kern, her husband Ben; grandchildren, Kim Hernandez, her husband Marc; Todd Winans, his wife Laura; Kristin Kirkley, her husband John (baby on the way in Jan 2016), and Marcus Kern. He also had 5 great-grandchildren, Trevor, Noah and Hunter Winans; Haley and Darin Hernandez. Services for Newt will be on Monday September 14, 2015 at 10:00 am at Getz funeral home, followed by graveside services at Hillcrest Cemetery, to be laid to rest by his wife. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Shiners Children's Hospital; Mesilla Valley Hospital (La Posada). We would like to thank Mesilla Valley Hospice Home care and La Posada for the wonderful, loving care he received. We also would like to especially thank Jamie from Mountain View Home Health, she always came in with a smile and he would always ask when is Jamie coming again? We will miss you Dad, but we know that you and Mom are dancing again in Heaven! PDF Printable Version
