On February 12, 1932, the sun rose to welcome Freddie Mae Fielder in Houston County, Grapeland, Texas. She was the ninth child born to Freddie Fletcher Sr. and Lila (Strange) Fletcher. Following his dream to migrate to the west coast, the Fletchers temporarily relocated to Las Cruces, NM where Freddie met and united in Holy Matrimony with Las Cruces native Lawrence Fielder. Lawrence and Freddie were married for 49 wonderful years. Until the setting sun, she was dedicated to raising her family. She was renowned for her cooking and famous apple and peach pies. Her daughters frequently showed up with college friends for her savory Sunday dinners. As an avid traveler, she visited such places as Mexico City; Managua, Nicaragua; Quito, Ecuador; Guatemala City, Guatemala; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Hawaii, and throughout the contiguous United States. Having grown up in the church, Freddie became a member of Bethel Second Baptist Church where she served as a member of the choir, president of the Mary C. Bradford Circle, and general mission president. She was also active in denominational work, supporting New Hope District Women and Mt. Olive Baptist State Convention. Freddie was employed at the Sara Lee Hosiery plant in Mesilla Park, NM where she worked as Packaging Supervisor and later as a plant industrial engineering technician working with representatives in every manufacturing area to explore outlets to recycle by-products generated by the plant. As a result of her endeavors, in 1992 former Mayor Ruben Smith appointed her to serve as a member of the Keep America Beautiful Community Pride Committee for the City of Las Cruces. Former Governor and Mrs. Bruce King presented Freddie with the Environmental Excellence award. Following 27 years of dedicated service to Sara Lee, she retired on June 30, 1992. The sun set for Freddie on August 22, 2018 at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, NM. She leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, Anita Fielder and Evelyn Joyce Fielder-Davis (Clifford) all of Las Cruces, NM. Grandchildren Brandis Fielder of Dallas, TX, Brittany Fielder Laws (William Laws), of Denham Springs, LA.; Alexander Fielder (Isabel) of Las Cruces, step-granddaughter Ines Israel (Tim) of Sewell, NJ; Siblings, Thomas Fletcher of Las Cruces, Jewel Irons (Sacramento, CA), Gladys Kennedy (Joe) of Bakersfield, CA; great grandchildren Brayden, Brea, Briley and Bryson Laws, Jaxon Jones, Xavier, Thalia, Tatiana, Lucia Norwood, Pilar Israel; two god-children, William Spencer of Las Cruces, NM and Evelyn Williams of Austin, TX; and sister-friend, Jeane Spencer; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and other dear friends. Freddie was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Fielder, her parents, brothers, Freddie Fletcher, Jr., Albert Fletcher, Odell Fletcher, Eugene Fletcher and sisters Minnie Bell Cole, Bulah Mae Butcher, Louise Jackson and Bradie Lee Erby-Fletcher. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 11.00 a.m. at Bethel Second Baptist Church. 405 E. Hadley Avenue, Las Cruces, NM 88001.
