Gene L. Aydt, 86, of Las Cruces, died Monday November 17, 2008. He was born January 20, 1922 in Dahlgren, Illinois to Andrew and Clara Aydt. Gene retired from the US Army after more than 22 years of honorable service to his country. Gene L. Aydt, 86, of Las Cruces, died Monday November 17, 2008. He was born January 20, 1922 in Dahlgren, Illinois to Andrew and Clara Aydt. Gene retired from the US Army after more than 22 years of honorable service to his country. While in the service he was awarded numerous medals, ribbons and honors but most notably was the Purple Heart for his meritorious service and sacrifice. Surviving him are his daughters Eva Aydt, Martha Ann Aydt, step-daughters Nellie Alexander, Gloria Alexander, Margaret Nunez and husband Ramon, Lydia Samaniego and husband Louie, Mary Sue Medina and husband Gilbert; step-son John Alexander; grandchildren Raymond Parra, Angela Edwards and husband James; great-grandchildren Taylor Sanchez, Josiah Parra-Guerrero, and Brooke Edwards as well as many other step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; brother Richard Aydt and his wife Charlene; his companion Jackie Welsh and his extended family and friends. Dad was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary and stepson Raymond Alexander. Dad was widely known and respected in the El Paso and Las Cruces communities for his honesty and fairness for selling cars at Story Cadillac which has since been renamed Bravo Cadillac. The Aydt patriarch will be forever missed by all his family and many friends who knew and loved him. A visitation for family and friends will be from 5-7 pm on Thursday November 20, 2008 at Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces, NM where a prayer vigil will follow at 7 pm. Our father and grandfather's funeral mass to celebrate his life will be at 10 am on Friday November 21, 2008 at St. Patrick Cathedral in El Paso, Texas with Fr. Martin Cordero officiating. Rite of Committal follows at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 1:30 pm with full military honors. The privilege of being dad's pallbearers will be members of his family and friends.
