Thursday morning Gene "Stinky" Peugh peacefully went on to his reward. Gene, 83, died at home in his sleep after a short illness. Gene was born May 13, 1930 to Sylvia and Mid Peugh in House, NM on the family homestead in the same house his mother was born. Gene graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1948 and came to Las Cruces to attend New Mexico A & M on a music scholarship. In 1957 he married the one true love of his life, Patricia Russell. In 1958 he opened Gene Peugh's Chevron Service Station on North Main St in Las Cruces. In 1968, ever the entrepreneur, he opened AAMCO Transmissions of Las Cruces. Gene's second love and passion was making music. He played the piano and trumpet in various bands for over 60 years. He entertained people all over New Mexico, West Texas and Mexico. He always said, "I've never had a bad day making music!" He was a member of the Las Cruces Breakfast Optimist Club, serving as Honor President, New Mexico-West Texas Distinguished Lt. Gov., Distinguished Governor and Optimist International appointed him to the Board of Directors in 1982-83. The Battle of the Bands was an NMSU music scholarship event for 12 years. He is survived by his wife Pat of 56 years, children Dean (Sandy), Tony (Jennifer) and Richelle Peugh-Ponder, grandchildren, Josh Peugh & Emilee Peugh Rush (Rob and Caleb), Justin, Ben, Nick, Terrence & Jonathan Peugh, and Katelin Ponder along with many dear friends and extended family. Visitation will be Friday January 3rd 5-7pm at the Getz Funeral Home 1410 E. Bowman. Funeral service will be January 4, 2014, 10:00 am at the Las Cruces Church of Christ, 2025 N. Valley Drive, Las Cruces. The burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Contributions can be made in Gene's memory to the Las Cruces Church of Christ Gene Peugh Memorial Scholarship Fund.
