On Sunday, January 17, 2021, George Donald Washington Sr., Faithful Father, Grandfather, Uncle, and Friend, entered into eternal rest at the age of 64. Born on December 21, 1956 to George Henry and Ernestine Washington (ne Wright) in Las Cruces, New Mexico, George spent his early years in Vado, New Mexico until moving with the family to Las Cruces where he would go on to play football for Mayfield High School. After a life of hard work and travel, George spent his later years in quiet reflection on his life while nurturing a personal relationship with The Lord. George openly shared his faith through daily messages to loved ones and an unwavering commitment to his traditional Sunday phone calls to each of his children. It is no wonder and a true blessing that on his final day, a Sunday, George shared one last call and prayer with all four of his children. As a young man, George began his career working in the uranium mines of Grants, New Mexico. His charismatic and bold personality later brought him much success in the hospitality and food industry. Fondly referred to as "Mr. Washington," his career took him across the southwest to San Diego, California; Las Vegas, Nevada and finally, back home again. Along the way he made many friends and was well-liked and respected for his quick wit and superior management skills. George had a passion for food and was a faithful member of Cowboys Nation. George also had excellent taste in music, with a particular fondness for Earth Wind & Fire and Funk. Listen to "Atomic Dog" by George Clinton and you will get a true sense for George: cool and classic, but with an eternally youthful spirit. George had a nickname for everyone, and his wisecracks and comebacks made bantering with him fun, personal, and memorable. A star in his own right, he shone brightly. George now joins in Heaven his father and mother, daughter Georgia, brothers Leo and Lester, and nephew La Var. He is survived by his loving children George Jr. (Candi), Felicia Banks (Christopher) and their mother Maria; Georgianne and her mother Neda; Shevon and his mother Ana; grandson Preston; siblings Charlie, Earnest, Marcella, Priscilla, Rena; and a host of very special nieces, nephews, extended family members and loving friends. George will be remembered for sending his signature "kiss on the forehead" to loved ones near and far. Whether you called him "Dad," "Uncle Donald," "Mr. Washington," or any other nickname from your special bond with him, George is now and always, "Beloved." The family has entrusted Getz Funeral Home (1410 E Bowman Avenue, Las Cruces, New Mexico 88001) with final arrangements.
