Gerardo Perez Florez, 69, of Dona Ana, New Mexico entered into eternal life, Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Mesilla Valley Hospice, La Posada in Las Cruces, New Mexico. "Jerry", as he was known, was born October 3, 1938 in Las Cruces to Ramon and Esther Florez. For 19 years, Jerry served the Las Cruces community, as a firefighter until 1977 when he retired as a Lieutenant. He was also a member of Our Lady of Purification Catholic Church. An avid outdoorsman, Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing, sipping an occasional Bud, and being surrounded by family. Jerry loved working on cars. He never minded lending a hand to family or friends. He loved baseball and the Raiders, was a little league baseball coach, and a boxing coach for the Police Athletic League (PAL) for many years. Jerry and his wife, Genevieve, had just celebrated 50 years of marriage, June first of this year. He is survived by his wife Genevieve of the family home; four sons, Rudy Florez of Las Cruces; David Florez and Dawn Walker of Crocker, MO; Ray Florez and Lizeth of Las Cruces; and Michael Florez of Dona Ana. Three daughters, Lisa Ventura and Armando of Dona Ana; Carmen Florez Lucero and Arthur of Las Cruces; and Susie Jimenez and Anthony of Las Cruces. Four brothers, Ray Florez of Leasburg; Armando (Andy) Florez, George Florez and Rose, Art (Tortilla) Florez, Valentin (Tino) Florez all of Dona Ana. Also surviving Jerry are stepbrother Sammy Guardado and stepsisters, Lucy, Rosa and Virginia Guardado all of Sacramento, CA; 21 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Esther; sister, Francis Zuniga; brother, David Florez; and granddaughter, Dawn Florez. A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 to 7 on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel where the Prayer Vigil will follow at 7 PM. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 10 AM on Monday, August 4, 2008 at Our Lady of Purification Catholic Church in Dona Ana with Rev. Miguel Macaya officiating. At Jerry's request, cremation will follow. Serving, as pallbearers will be, Jaime Hernandez, Daniel Madrid (Chonte); Manny Zuniga Jr, Michael Zuniga, Angel Florez Jr, and Troy Scoughton. Honorary bearers will be Arthur Lucero, Johnny Carnero, Armando Ventura, Eddie Flores, Albert Banegas Jr. Jay Palomino, Diego Banegas, John Florez, Chris Florez, Johnny Florez and Andy (Panda) Barela.
