Grayson Meerscheidt, a lifelong resident of the Mesilla Valley, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008, in Las Cruces after an illness. He was 77. Grayson was born Feb. 21, 1939, to Hilmar and Esther Meerscheidt in Las Cruces, N.M. He grew up on the family's apple and pecan farm south of Mesilla, and grew pecans there for more than 40 years. He graduated from Las Cruces Union High School in 1949 and attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He returned to Las Cruces for his senior year and graduated from New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1954 with a degree in agriculture. He married Patsy Patton, formerly of Carlsbad, on June 3, 1956, in Las Cruces. Grayson was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed numerous fishing and hunting trips during his lifetime, including deep-sea fishing in Mexico and elk hunting in the Gila Wilderness with his family and friends. He also enjoyed off-roading, and helped found the Las Cruces Jeep Club. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 62 in Las Cruces and held a private pilot's license. Grayson and Patsy also loved to square dance, and danced for years with the Do-Si-Dos and Bluebonnets square dancing groups. After graduating from college, Grayson and his brother, Stuart, operated Butte Pump Co. Grayson started Ace Jet Pump Service, a domestic pump service, in 1958. He started Servisoft domestic water conditioning service and sold it in 1966. He went to work for the Bureau of Prisons in 1968 as farm manager at La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution, and retired in 1988 as a correctional officer. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Patsy; his son, James Grayson Meerscheidt and his wife, Michelle Meerscheidt; his daughter, Wendy Meerscheidt Cole and her husband, Fletcher Cole; his brother, Stuart Meerscheidt; his grandson, Quintin Grayson Cole; his granddaughters, Morgan Meerscheidt and Madalynn Cole; his nieces, Marilynn Morris and Janette Brunt; and close family friend, Andrea Joseph. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Friday March 14, 2008, at Getz Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice.
