Helen was born in mesquite, NM to Daisy Lee Herring St. John on February 12, 1926. She spent most of her early years on Coolidge AZ. The family returned to the Las Cruces area so Helen could finish school and she graduated from Las Cruces Union High School in 1945. When Helen was a senior in high school she met a southern gentleman from Alabama, Sgt Chuck Murray, who was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base. On Dec. 1st, 1944 they married in Helen's parent's home on El Paseo Road. They were married for over 61 years at the time of Chuck's death on July 5, 2006. After 20 plus years in the Air Force, Chuck retired and brought Helen and the family "home" to Las Cruces. Chuck then retired for the second time and they moved back to Las Cruces, where Helen sought out class of '44 members and organized monthly luncheons at different restaurants' in the Las Cruces area. Helen worked at Solano Square Cleaners; Gibson's Discount and several Shell stations in the Las Cruces area. At the age of 70, Helen took up two hobbies that she loved; hand quilting-she made quilts for every member of the family and oil painting-she painted her beloved Organ Mountains for each of her children. She also made "from scratch" the Best German Chocolate cakes in this world. Helen loved to read and watch her favorite TV shows. Most of all she loved to be with her children, grand children and great-grand children. Helen is survived by her daughter, Charolette Winans, her husband Jerry; son, Charlie Murray, his wife Marty, all of Las Cruces and daughter Sheila Fox, of Williamsburg, NM; Grand Children-Kim Winans Hernandez, husband Marc, of Gilbert, AZ; G.
