Helen Joan Bergan, 76, of Las Cruces, died suddenly September 5, 2013 of a heart attack. She was born in Hawley, MN, attended Oak Grove High School and graduated from Augsburg College in Minneapolis. She received a Masters degree in library science from the University of Minnesota. After completing her schooling Helen worked at the public library in Yonkers, NY. Three years later, she moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where she was employed at a Lutheran radio station. This was a wonderful experience. When she left three years later, she boarded a cargo ship and traveled through several African countries. She also saw much of Europe, arriving home with $5 in her pocket! Helen left Minnesota to take a library position at the Martin Luther King Library in Washington, D.C. Following early retirement she wrote several books, including Where the Money Is and Climbing Kilimanjaro, An African Odyssey. Helen followed the sun and in 2003 moved to Las Cruces where she lived at Mesilla Park Heritage Condominiums. She will be lovingly remembered by her brothers, Gene Bergan (America), Darrel Bergan (Ann), nephews Greg and Mark, Many, many friends and a wonderful cat named Chile. PDF Printable Version
