Homer Whatley Miller, age 74, of Las Cruces, NM entered eternal life on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at Memorial Medical Center following a courageous battle with ill health. His family doctor remarked on how much he had endured and done so with such dignity through the years. He was born on August 9, 1931 in Alexandria, LA to Morris M. and Iva Mae Whatley Miller, both of who preceded him in death in 1979. Homer was their second child. His older brother Morris (JR) who passed on in 1997 lived with his wife Wilma in Opelousas, LA. He is survived by his brother Harold and his wife Francean, who live in Oklahoma City, OK, and his sister, Versie Lee and her husband Billie McGee who live in Thibodaux, LA. Homer graduated from Opelousas High School and attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, LA. He then served for four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in February 1955. A fervent patriot, he had a deep respect for our flag, our country and its constitution. Following his service in the military, he worked in Louisiana for the Well Services Division of Schlumberger Technology Corporation of Houston, TX. Then his career path turned to that of electrician and Electrical Contractor in Santa Fe, NM. He then served as the New Mexico State Electrical Inspector in Las Cruces from Amador south to the Mexican Border, retiring in 1993. Fishing was Homer's lifelong passion, starting in the bayous of Louisiana to the lakes and rivers of New Mexico. He spent the last 26 years of his life with Carol, his devoted companion, wife and fishing partner. On weekends and holidays while working and almost daily after retirement, they lived at Caballo and fished in their Bass Tracker from dawn to dusk. One of the highlights of his retirement was winning $15,000 in the New Mexico Lottery on a ticket purchased in June 1999 at Lil Abner's Quick Trip Store in Caballo. Homer is survived by his loving wife Carol Settevig Miller and family members, Cheryl and Scott FitzGerald, Laurel Anderson, Lyndell and Tom Lucero, five of six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was noted for his wit, charm, story telling and great sense of humor. He was always a good host and enjoyed cooking special Cajun food for family and friends. Few were aware of his musical talent. He had a beautiful singing voice and could recognize any musical artist after hearing just a few notes of their presentation. This June the family members joined him and Carol in a family reunion and celebration of her 75th birthday. Also surviving are his daughters Susan, Merrill and Elizabeth and his son Gary and three grandchildren. His daughter Brenda preceded him in death. A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2005 from 5 to 7 PM at Getz Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be on Monday, November 28, 2005 at 10 AM at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at 1 PM on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM.
