Irene E. Viramontes took the gentle hand of the Lord on January 3, 2006 after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. She was a devoted daughter, sister, niece, cousin, aunt and friend, who was deeply loved and will be missed by many. Irene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in El Paso, Texas, as well as a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order. She was born in La Union, New Mexico on March 14, 1933 to Jose M. and Inez Enriquez Viramontes, the last of 13 children. Due to her mother's illness, and death in 1936, she was raised by her aunts Anita Viramontes and Juana Viramontes Holguin in Canutillo, Texas. As an adult she moved to Las Cruces, where she worked at Popular Dry Goods. Irene then moved to El Paso, where she worked at The Popular until her retirement. She will be remembered for her quick wit and dry humor, as well as her hospitality and generosity to all she met. In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by her second mother Anita Viramontes, many aunts and uncles, siblings Jose M. "Conke" Viramontes, Consuelo V. Flores, Lillian V. Torres, Luis E. Viramontes, Armando E. "Porky" Viramontes, Rev. David E. Viramontes, and Robert E. "Boots" Viramontes, and nephew Robert V. Flores. She is survived by her sisters Corina V. Lopez and husband, Dick of Las Cruces and Maria Teresa Holguin of Dallas, Texas, brother James R. Viramontes and wife, Alta of Austin, Texas, Aunt Juana Holguin and family, as well as many dear cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. During her illness her needs were lovingly attended to by cousins Salvador and Dolores Rodriguez and children, Robert and Teresa Gonzalez and children, Frank and Socorro Garcia and children and Annie Sierra Koch of El Paso, Texas. We would especially like to thank Dr. Robert Gonzalez, of Dallas, Texas. We also appreciate the services and attention provided by the doctors, nurses and staff of Sierra Providence Hospital during her illness. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 PM Friday, Jan.6, 2006 at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church where a prayer vigil will follow at 7 PM. The funeral mass is at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006 also at St. Genevieve's with Fr. Gerardo Rivera and Fr. Juan Moreno officiating. Rite of Committal will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be members of Irene's family and friends. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice PDF Printable Version
