Jackie Von Shipp P.H.D.

Was born to Jack and Mabel Smith on January 16, 1945, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, she passed away peacefully at the age of 79 due to respiratory failure on February 25th,2024 with her family by her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an older sister Quita Satterfield and an older brother George Smith.

She leaves behind her husband and her best friend W.R. (Randy) Shipp of the family home and her son her pride and joy Marc R. Shipp (Albuquerque, NM).

After high school she attended New Mexico State University where she received a degree in secondary education. After several years she and her family returned to Las Cruces, N.M. where she began her graduate studies at NMSU. After receiving her Doctorate in Education, she taught for over twenty years at Dona Ana Branch. During her tenure at the Dona Ana Branch, she cofounded the Literacy Volunteers of Dona Ana County, an organization dedicated to improving adult reading skills within the local community. As a proficient private pilot, she enjoyed making frequent flights back to her hometown to visit family and friends. Jackie was an active member of the 99s, a local chapter of a women’s flying club. She also served a term as a member of Las Cruces Airport Advisory board. For many years she enjoyed golfing with her friends and playing bridge with the ladies at Picacho Hills Bridge club. A voracious reader it is estimated that she read an excess of 10,000 novels during her lifetime. During her later years she continued her reading and crossword puzzles and playing on the computer.

She will always be remembered as a bright engaging lady eager to help all those fortunate enough to know her. In accordance with her wishes no funeral services will be held, a private gathering has already transpired.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution in her name may be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice.
