James H. "Jim" Powell of Las Cruces Died January 9, 2011 at the age of 70 Jim was born January 5, 1941 in Sinton, Texas. He graduated from New Mexico State University in 1966. He enjoyed a 32 year career working for NASA at both Johnson Space Center in Houston and White Sands Test Facility in Las Cruces. Jim enjoyed southwest history and was a published author in that field. He was a member and one time president of the local historical society. Jim was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed many years playing softball in city and church leagues as well as coaching you sports teams. One of his favorite things in recent years was cheering on his grandchildren at their various sporting events. Jim's life was extended by the generosity of an anonymous stranger when he received a liver transplant in 2002 due to a rare liver disease. His family would like to acknowledge this gift of life and emphasize the importance of being an organ donor. Jim was preceded in death by his parents V.O. and Helen Estes. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Roma Powell; his daughter Cindy Peterson and husband Randall of Las Cruces; his son David Powell and wife Katie of Albuquerque; his two grandchildren Jared and Rylie Peterson; his sister Ruby Lea and husband Carl of Santa Fe; his brother Luther Estes and wife Lorna of Diamond Bar, CA and many other treasured family members. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Getz Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Pippen of Mesquite Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Jim's Name to either Navajo Ministries (www.navajoministries.org), Baptist Children's Home (www.nmbch.com) or Mesilla Valley Hospice (www.mvhospice.org).
