James L. Pollock, Jr., M.D. 82 years old of Las Cruces, NM died Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center. James L. Pollock, Jr., M.D. 82 years old of Las Cruces, NM died Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Pollock was born June 28, 1924 in Wray, Colorado to James "Les" and Luceil Pollock. In 1947, he entered the United States Navy, completing medical school at the University of Colorado in 1948 and receiving his commission as a U.S. Navy Medical Corps officer. From 1948 to 1957, Dr. Pollock served as Chief of Pediatrics with US Naval Hospital in Guam, served as Executive Officer and Medical Officer at the US Naval Dispensary in Bermuda, and as Assistant Chief of Pediatrics at the US Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton, CA. He completed a specialty fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology at the Harvard Medical School Children's Hospital Medical Center and The Children's Cancer Research Foundation ("Jimmy Fund Clinic") in 1958. From 1958 to 1976, he practiced Pediatric medicine in Albuquerque, NM, conducted leukemia research, and served various teaching appointments at University of New Mexico and UNM School of Medicine. Dr. Pollock retired from his Pediatric practice in 1976 to begin a full-time clinical practice in Alcoholism and Drug Addiction. From 1976 to 1987, he served as designer, developer and Medical Director of "Yucca Lodge" at Ft. Bayard Medical Center, and from 1987 to 1993 served as Medical Director of Chemical Dependency Unit at Mesilla Valley Hospital South, as well as maintaining an active private practice in Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency. Dr. Pollock was board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1962 with subspecialty eligibility in pediatric Hematology and Oncology, and was later also board certified in Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. From 1987 to 1999, he performed extensive teaching, consulting, lectures, seminars, and workshops on alcoholism, drug addiction, chemical dependency and related subjects both in New Mexico and other states. He received a number of awards and honors for his work, culminating in a Special Award for Lifetime Achievement presented to him in 2005 by his personal and professional colleagues and the community, in association with the Southern New Mexico Substance Abuse Collaborative. Dr. Pollock is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara West Pollock; three daughters, Leslie A. Pollock of Colorado Springs, CO; Jacquelyn G. Starkey of Winston, NM; Barbara L. Kling of Las Cruces, NM; and one son, James T. Pollock of Las Cruces, NM. Also surviving Dr. Pollock are seven grandchildren, Christina B. Pollock, Joslyn Brown, Heather Starkey, James Eli Starkey, Samantha Kling, Valerie Kling, Anna Kling, and two great-grandchildren, Kayli Davis and David Brown. Memorial Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Norm Story of First Presbyterian Church. PDF Printable Version
