James Lynn "Slim" Whitlock, born on December 26, 1959, in Hatch, New Mexico, passed away on March 9, 2024. He was lovingly welcomed into the world by his parents J.B. and Mary Frances Whitlock, who named him after James Sims and Lynn Russell, the donors of a special blood type. James was known by various endearing names such as "Bones," "Slim," and "Papo."

James Lynn "Slim" Whitlock, born on December 26, 1959, in Hatch, New Mexico, passed away on March 9, 2024. He was lovingly welcomed into the world by his parents J.B. and Mary Frances Whitlock, who named him after James Sims and Lynn Russell, the donors of a special blood type. James was known by various endearing names such as "Bones," "Slim," and "Papo."

In 1978, Slim married the love of his life, Gracie, and together they had two children, Brandy, and Cameron Whitlock. Slim and Gracie also raised their Granddaughter, Destiny Whitlock. Slim adored his family, dedicating himself to their well-being

Slim was a prominent figure in the Hatch Valley. He was part of the Hatch FFA Meats team that won a National Title. Slim’s life was a testament to his commitment to others. He served his community tirelessly, sitting on the Hatch Valley School Board as a Trustee and Mayor of Hatch. His dedication to improving the lives of those around him was unparalleled, and he approached every task with humility and grace.


Despite his many accomplishments, Slim remained remarkably humble. He believed in the power of a kind word and a helping hand, always putting others before himself. His infectious smile and warm hugs touched the lives of everyone he met, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.


Slim was happiest when surrounded by his family, enjoying hosting and cooking for family gatherings. He also cherished his hunting trips with his father, brother, uncles, and grandfather, as well as his Son, Cameron, Son-in-law David, grandsons, and brothers-in-law, creating fond memories in the mountains. Slim loved traveling with his "Bunny," children, Son-in-law and grandchildren.


Slim’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren, and took pride in their accomplishments. He was the pillar of strength and wisdom, always ready with a listening ear and sage advice.


Slim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gracie "Bunny" Whitlock, his mother Mary Frances Whitlock, his children Brandy Holguin (husband David), Cameron Whitlock (wife Erica), and Destiny Whitlock, as well as his five grandchildren David Edward, Michael, Sophia, Jayden, and Myles. He is also survived by his siblings Debbie Cordero (husband Bobby) and Bobby Whitlock, several in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews. Slim was preceded in death by his father, J.B. Whitlock, his sister-in-law, Shirley Whitlock, and brother-in-law, Javier Lujan.


Pallbearers for Slim's funeral are Cameron Whitlock, David Holguin, David Edward Holguin, Michael Holguin, Dennis Riggs, Eddie Terrazas, Roy Maldonado, Oscar Maldonado, Dante McNeil, Rey Munoz, Sergio Munoz, and Daniel Munoz.


As Slim enters the gates of heaven and meets St. Peter, we can imagine him responding to the question of how he is with his usual cheerful reply, "Extra Good!"


Slim’s life will be celebrated on March 23, 2024 at 10:00 am at Hatch Valley High School.
