Janice Joleen Peterson passed away peacefully on October 29, 2021, after a brief illness. She was born on August 18, 1938, in WaKeeney, Kansas to Joseph F. and Mary Carlson. She met her husband Gene at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and they were married February 14th, 1958. Janice Joleen Peterson passed away peacefully on October 29, 2021, after a brief illness. She was born on August 18, 1938, in WaKeeney, Kansas to Joseph F. and Mary Carlson. She met her husband Gene at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and they were married February 14th, 1958. Jan and her husband moved from Kansas to Las Cruces in the summer of 1976, and their journey as New Mexicans began.
Jan was a musician, a gardener, and a pet lover. She had a huge heart for animals; she adopted many pets in her lifetime and gave them all amazing lives. She was also an accomplished artist. Her talents included wood carving and painting, and her pieces were shown at the Holy Cross Craft Fair.
Jan was an avid archeologist as well; she was a Friend of Fort Seldon and volunteered with Passport in Time. The most notable site she participated in was Fort Craig, NM but she also worked on archeological sites throughout New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Gene and Jan and their sons enjoyed spending time in Colorado backpacking, camping, and skiing, and the love of the outdoors still carries on in her family. Jan had a great sense of humor with a dry twist, and a quick wit. She and her husband Gene were active in Peace Lutheran Church, where she served as a caretaker for their plants and helped with many other church activities.
