Jennie Hawthorne Garland, Our cherished mother, grandmother, and friend passed away on May 3, 2005 at Village of Northrise, surrounded by family and friends. Jennie is preceded in death by her husband R. C. Garland, her son R.C. Garland, Jr., her daughter Virginia Garland Waterhouse, and her granddaughter Carolyn Waterhouse. Jennie is survived by her son Edwin W. Garland and his wife Jaylen Garland; her son Augustus H. Garland; and her grandchildren Melyssa E. Garland, Matthew C. Garland, Stephen J. Garland, Jacob E. Garland; a nephew John Fred Evatt, who resides in Arkansas; and former daughter-in-law and close friend Jeanne R. Garland. Jennie was born to Joe and Susie Hawthorne on October 30, 1905 in Parks, Arkansas. She attended University of Arkansas in Fayetteville for two years, earning a Teacher's Certificate. After a short time of teaching school, she married R.C. Garland, and they moved to Las Cruces, where her husband was an attorney for many years until his death. Jennie was very active in the community as a member of the Women's Improvement Association (W.I.A.), serving as President for several years. One of Jennie's favorite activities was tutoring immigrants to help them obtain their citizenship. She also belonged to a book club, in which she shared her great passion for reading her beloved books, especially those authored by Shakespeare. Jennie loved to play bridge and Bingo. She resided at Golden Mesa until December of 2004, where she enjoyed her independence, many friendships, and various activities. Jennie will be remembered for her strong determination, her generosity, and her sharp wit. She attended United Presbyterian Church for many years and recently began attending First Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Fidelis Bible Study class. A funeral service to celebrate Jennie's earthly and eternal life will be held on Saturday morning, May 7, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Dr. Frank Zamora will officiate the services. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall and all guests are welcome to attend. Pallbearers include grandsons Matthew, Stephen, and Jacob Garland and friends Jesse Luther and Will McWhorter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, who made Jennie's passing so much easier for her and the family. PDF Printable Version
