Jesse James Almon was born January 24, 1928 in Tallapoosa, Georgia to Annie and Rader Almon, the 6th of 8 children. He passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010 after a battle with lung cancer. In 1950, he graduated from Fort Valley State University, in Fort Valley, Georgia with a B.S. degree in biology and where he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. After graduated he joined the armed forces and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and settled in Toledo, Ohio. Jesse moved with his family to Las Cruces in 1965, where he worked at White Sands Missile Range and NASA's Johnson Space Center. While there he worked with the Viking and Apollo mission support. He retired from NASA in 1989. After he retired, Jesse remained active in his community where he was a substitute teacher and volunteer math tutor for high school and college students. Jesse joined church at a very young age and maintained his membership throughout his life. As a member of Bethel Second Baptist Church, he served on the as the assistant Treasurer, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. He and his wife Helen were lifelong bowlers and bowled in the Senior Olympics where they both received medals. Jesse was an avid gardener and golfer and could often be found tending to his garden and yard or on the links putting for par. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen Almon. Children - Mary Crayon of Toledo ,OH, Elizabeth Conley of Boston, MA, Maxine Turner of Las Cruces, NM, Darrel Almon of Houston, TX, Keith Almon of Brooklyn, NY, Grandchildren, Alires Almon, Denise Crayon, Richard L.
