Jewell "Judy" Edith McMurtrie Solberg was born on July 13, 1920 in Mena, Arkansas and died October 6, 2005. Judy was the third child of five children born to Warren A. and Myrtle (Phillips) McMurtrie. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert Solberg, brother George, sisters Lola and Ruby. Judy grew up during the Depression Era in the Texas and Oklahoma oil fields. Always an avid reader and excellent student, she was valedictorian of her high school. After high school, Judy attended Draughon's Business College in Wichita Falls, Texas. During WWII, she worked in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. where she met and married Herb. The family moved to Las Cruces in 1960 when Herb transferred to White Sands Missile range. Judy worked at the Las Cruces School District Finance Department from 1962 until her retirement in 1985. She then had time to take numerous trips abroad. Her love of family and sense of humor will be greatly missed. She is survived by her sister, Leona Marshall and husband Garrett of Wichita Falls. She leaves a son Gordon and wife Laura of Radium Springs; two daughters Karen Chapman and husband Ron of Page, Arizona and Debbie Mercer and husband John of La Mesa. Grandchildren are Sue Solberg and husband Chris Mathews of Phoenix, Neil Solberg of Radium Springs, Christina Mayhew and husband Tim of Anthem, AZ, Elizabeth Thelen and husband Joe of Phoenix, Abby Chapman of Phoenix, Jacob Mercer of Colorado Springs, and three great-grandchildren, Mikaela Mayhew, Aaron Mayhew and Lillian Thelen. A special thank you to the Desert Willows staff at the Village of Northrise for their loving care for several years. Also, thank you to the Mesilla Valley Hospice for their compassion and care. Memorial Services to celebrate Judy's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005 in the Getz Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Morrison officiating. The family invites friends to share remembrances about Judy during the memorial service.
